Johann Christoph Friedrich von Schiller (1759–1805) was a German poet, philosopher, physician, historian, and playwright. He was the author of Letters on the Aesthetic Education of Man, and the plays The Robbers, William Tell, and Don Carlos. His poem "An die Freude" ("Ode to Joy") was famously set by Ludwig van Beethoven in the final movement of the composer's Ninth Symphony.
